Erik Van Lieshout Deurne, Netherlands, b. 1968

Biography

Lives and works in Rotterdam.

 

He studied at the Academy of Art and design in 's Hertogenbosch and at Ateliers '63 both in the Netherlands.

 

Initially established in the 1990s as an expressionist painter and draftsman, van Lieshout’s work has since evolved into a multifaceted practice that includes architectural interventions, installations and videos that address a multitude of contemporary socio-political issues such as multiculturalism, right-wingers, the position of minorities and outsiders as well as the modern consumer society. 

 

Some of his solo shows were held at Kunstverein Hanover, Germany; South London Gallery, London; Anton Kern Gallery, New York; Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, Germany; Bawag Contemporary Vienna, Austria; Stella Lohaus Gallery, Belgium; Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna; and Centre d'édition contemporaine, Geneva, among others. 

 

His work has also been part of group exhibits, such as Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tessaloniki Biennale, Tessaloniki; Center for Contemporary Culture, Moscow; Moscow Bienale; 55th Venice Biennale, Venice; Colombo Art Biennale; Art Unlimited, Basel; The Museum Boijmans van Beunigen, Rotterdam, and many others.
