Biography

David Bates

 Born in Dallas, Texas, USA, 1952. 

Lives and works in Dallas.

 

Bates studied at Southern Methodist University, he earnt a Bachellor Degree in Fine Arts in 1975 and an MFA in 1978, durng 1976 he participated in the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art. 

 

Bates’s paintings, sculpture, and works on paper explore his deep affinity for the South of the Inted States, its people, and the physical and cultural landscape. In his work, he blends the influence of European and American modernists with his lifelong love of folk art.

 

Bates has had numerous solo exhibitions in Texas including the Austin Museum of Art, The Dallas Center for Contemporary Art, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; as well as in the Betty Cuningham Gallery, New York; the John Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco, CA; and in The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii. He has participated in countless group exhibitions, most notably the 1987 Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial.

 

Bates’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among others.
