Biography

Lives and works in New York.

Ligon received a Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University and attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. He has numerous awards including the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. 

His work surveys issues of history, language and identity. He has pursued an exploration of American history, literature, and society across a body of work that builds critically on the legacies of modern painting and conceptual art. His practice encompasses paintings, neon, photography, sculptures, print, installation and video.

Ligon had a mid-career retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and has also had solo exhibitions at Camden Arts Center, London; Kunstverein Munich; Power Plant, Toronto; Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, among others. He has also participated in major group exhibitions such as the Berlin Biennal, Documenta XI, and Venice Biennale. 

His work is part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Art Institute of Chicago; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; Tate Modern, London; and the Centre Pompidou, Paris, among others.
