Alexey Kallima Russia, b. 1969

Biography

Lives and works in Moscow.

Kallima graduated from the Krasnodar College of Fine Arts. He represented Russia at the 46th and the 53rd Venice Biennale (1995, 2009). In 2006 he won the prize for Best Visual Art Work in the State Competition in Contemporary Arts INNOVATION, Moscow. 

Kallima’s work often refers to the theme of the Chechen war in a figurative expressive language, far from his responsibilities to Socialist Realism. The materials he employs in his paintings and collages are ephemeral, such as charcoal, fluorescent paints and candy wrappers.

 His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions worldwide including Russia, Europe and the USA. Among his solo shows are Regina Gallery, Moscow and London; The 4th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art; Galerie Ann de Villepoix, Paris, France; Musée D'art Contemporain Val-de-Marne, Paris; Lehmann Maupin, New York; École Nationale Supérieure d'Art de Bourges, France and Galerie Volker Diehl, Berlin.

He has also participated in group exhibitions atthe Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA; The First Ukrainian Biennale of Modern Art, Kiev; Kandinsky Prize, Barcelona; Musée de Louvre, Paris; the 3rd Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, and others.
