Apostolos Georgiou Greece, b. 1952
Apostolos Georgiou
He was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1952. He lives and works in Athens, Greece.Apostolos Georgiou studied architecture in Vienna and painting in Florence. Since the end of the 90s, his work has been increasingly present in the Greek art scene. Painting is the clearest form as the medium of expression for Georgiou. Inside his largescale formats, the subjects remain inert in a state of expectation or carry out not evident, unorthodox moves and activities. Georgiou's images of everyday life are reproduced at an unknown space-time, full of bizarre humor. These absurd scenes are composed with a controlled flurry of deft marks and wide brush swipes. Georgiou has had solo exhibitions at the Rodeo Gallery, London; Rebecca Camhi Gallery, Athens; Zina Athanassiadou Gallery, Thessaloniki; Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki, among others. From his recent group shows, the most notable was the one at the Benaki Museum and the Gagosian Gallery, Athens. Also, his painting has been part of important fairs such as Documenta, Kassel; and Art Basel, Hong Kong.
