Su En Wong Singapur, b. 1973
Lives and works in New York, United States.
Su-en Wong began her art studies at an early age, under the tutelage of Lui Kang, one of Singapore’s pioneer artists. Then, she moved to the United States to embark on a career as a concert pianist, but soon discovered her true passion: painting and drawing.
Wong studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and did artist residency at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation, New York and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, in Maine.
Su-En work explores her gender, identity, and the construction of culture. The artist depicts a private and deeply personal world, through portraits of young women finding inner balance, in luscious natural settings. Her paintings are a reference to traditional Chinese landscape, inhabited by the contemporary subjects that reflect the Su-en Wong’s deep culture and subtle humor.
Wong’s work has been exhibited at numerous places, including Stux Gallery, New York; the Chicago Cultural Centre, Chicago; Kevin Bruk Gallery, Miami; The Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, and Artspace Witzenhausen, Amsterdam. Her paintings are also included in major museum collections throughout the United States, such as the SFMOMA and The Whitney Museum.
