Saul Villa Mexico City, b. 1958
Lives and Works in Merida, Yucatan.
Saúl Villa studied graphic arts with Frank Conelly, Mark Balakjian and Juan José Torralba, in London and Barcelona. Later, he earned a bachelor’s degree in visual arts education from the Escuela Superior de Artes de Yucatán.
Villa is known for his pictorial work, which he executes with great effectiveness. His art is full of beauty, irony, and humor. The artist approaches painting from the criticism of the medium’s view; he proposes to expand art to unconventional formats, and link it to other disciplines, such as video, action art, and installation in situ. Villa has exhibited his work individually in different display spaces in Mexico City, notably Luis Barragán House and Studio, The Contemporary Art Gallery, Galería OMR, Museo Experimental El Eco, and Museo de Arte Carillo Gil. His participation in exhibitions abroad includes The Museum der Moderne, in Salzburg. Villas’ work is part of various international museum collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Salzburg Museum, Salzburg; Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City; Museo de Arte Moderno y Museo de Arte Carillo Gill, both also in Mexico City.
