Tomoaki Suzuki (2014): CAPC, Musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux
April 4 to June 1, 2014.
The CAPC in Bordeaux presented an exhibition of the works of Japanese artist Tomoaki Suzuki, curated by CAPC’s Chief Curator Alexis Vaillant. It featured a selection of figurative sculptures carved in wood, measuring about sixty centimeters.
The exhibition evoked contemporary ways of life and ancient sculpture traditions of the East through the exhibit of twenty of these rare small sculptures made between 1999 and 2014, in the museum’s nave. The sculptures came from different collections from all over the world, (Unites States, France, England, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and Switzerland).
The exhibition gathered the sculptures in the same space within the nave of Lainé, where they never looked at each other, alluding to society’s loneliness and indifference, and reflecting on the relationship between connection and isolation, and seriousness and derision. The artist does not want his characters to converse, but to preserve their sense of individuality while also addressing the concept of community.
The catalog Tomoaki Suzuki was published for the exhibition, it was co-produced by CAPC and the Museo Marino Marini Firenze.
